US DOE and Japan MEXT Collaboration on Extreme Computing 2019

In 2014 the US Department of Energy (DOE) and the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) signed a Memorandum of Understanding  (MOU) establishing a cooperative relationship in support of extreme-scale computation.  Working together, Japanese and US scientists are exploring.  The participants of the MOU agree to work together where it is mutually beneficial to expand the HPC ecosystem and improve system capability. Joint activities include collaborative development of open source software, evaluation and analysis of benchmarks and architectures, and standardization of mature technologies. A key part of the agreement is the exchange of personnel, including scientists, engineers, postdoctoral associates, and graduate students.   Pete Beckman from Argonne National Laboratory and Yutaka Ishikawa of RIKEN co-chair the Technical Committee on Computer Science and Software, which facilitates the implementation and coordination of cooperative activities.

Each year, scientists funded by MEXT and the DOE gather to present the results of their collaborative research and discuss how to advance extreme computing.  This year, Northwestern University is hosting the workshop.  We expect about 30 scientists from the US and Japan to gather in Chicago for 1.5 days.

Meeting Details

When:  Participants should arrive in Chicago May 28th.  The first full day of the workshop will be May 29th.  On May 30th, the workshop will end by 14:30pm.
